Spacecraft Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) Engineer

Relative Dynamics Inc. is seeking to hire a Spacecraft Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) Engineer to provide support to end users on a variety of issues and to identify, research, and resolve technical problems.

What You'll Get to Do:

  • Perform GNC Hardware (HW) component trade studies, selection, and subsystem design
  • Support systems engineering development of mission Concept of Operations (CONOPS)
  • Generate and optimize Design Reference Missions trajectories and implement guidance algorithms
  • Develop navigation and orbit determination algorithms and processes
  • Design control laws to meet vehicle performance and stability margin requirements
  • Implement GNC Flight Software (FSW) state machine
  • Define GNC subsystem Fault Detection, Identification, and Response (FDIR)
  • Develop high-fidelity GNC simulation and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) test frameworks
  • Integrate and validate GNC FSW and HW components
  • Support internal and external design reviews
  • Execute GNC subsystem verification and validation using HIL and Monte Carlo simulation
  • Support flight activities and analyze flight performance data

What You'll Need:

  • Required Experience:
    • BS degree in aerospace engineering or a computer science discipline
    • 5+ years' experience as a GNC or SW engineer
    • Supported the development or operation of spacecraft mission systems
    • Interfaced with aerospace customers in the commercial or government sectors
    • Developed, implemented, and verified flight software
    • Led a team across a project lifecycle (not necessarily a spacecraft or a whole GNC system)
    • Worked multiple projects simultaneously, determined work priorities for a team
    • Used tools like Jira or GitLab to track software issues
    • Used tools like Git or SVN for software change management
  • Required Skills:
    • Excellent communication, analysis, and problem-solving skills
    • Strong programming skills in C, C++, Python, or similar language
  • Additional Qualifications
    • MATLAB to create, process, analyze, and visually represent data
    • Simulink to model dynamic systems
    • GNC FSW development and simulation software such as MATLAB/Simulink, TrickSim/JEOD, or MAX FSW
    • Orbital mechanics, attitude dynamics, and satellite control
    • Orbit modeling and simulation software such as GMAT, STK, or FreeFlyer
    • Knowledge of GNC sensors and actuators
    • Hands-on experience with IMU, reaction wheels, star trackers, gyroscopes, and other GNC HW
    • Non-linear and linear system analysis and control principles and tools to design feedback control systems
    • Blended attitude solutions from a variety of sensor data
    • Spacecraft on-orbit operations and anomaly resolution
    • NASA’s GPS-Enhanced Onboard Navigation System (GEONS)
    • NASA’s Core Flight System (CFS)
    • Rendezvous, Proximity Operations, and Capture/Docking (RPOC/D) trajectories and algorithms
    • MS or PhD
